In the Perspective work-issued today, we highlight the possible genetic background of COVID-19 interindividual variability, ranging from asymptomatic infection to life-threatening disease. Despite many international efforts, the genetic and immunological determinants of resistance to SARS-CoV-2 infection remain unknown.

Following such discoveries like autosomal recessive deficiency of chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) shown to underlie resistance to HIV-1, we propose a strategy for identifying, recruiting, and genetically analysing individuals who are naturally resistant to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Thus, we’re glad we can contribute to the cohort by submitting several hundred WGS from Polish volunteers and conjointly search for the genetic background of COVID-19 susceptibility/resistance!
