Since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pan-demic in December 2019, more than 200 million people have been infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), resulting in at least 4 million deaths and probably closer  to  7  to  9  million  deaths  worldwide.

Interindividual  clinical  variability  in  the  course  of  acute  infection  is  vast,  extending  from  silent or mild infection in about 90% of individuals to pneumonia and respiratory failure, both requiring hospitalization, in less than 10 and 2% of cases, respectively. Age is the major epidemiological risk factor for hospitalization or death from pneumonia, the risk doubling with every 5 years of age (1, 2). The frequencies of critical disease and death from COVID-19 are higher in men than in women (3–5).
